[Engineer Log #2] Civil Engineer Career: The Reality Behind the Profession

A career as a civil engineer is often misunderstood.

When I first entered university, I had no idea what a civil engineer career would really mean. I still remember my very first lecture. Sitting in a quiet classroom, slightly nervous, I waited for the professor to begin.

Then he wrote a single sentence on the board:

“Civil engineers are the ones who shape the Earth.”

At that moment, something changed in me. To a 20-year-old student, that phrase felt incredibly powerful. I thought to myself, “Maybe I can become someone who does something truly meaningful.”

Why I Chose Civil Engineering

As time passed, I realized that civil engineering is not just a profession—it is the foundation of our everyday lives.

From power plants and dams to bridges, roads, water systems, and even entire cities, civil engineers design and build the infrastructure that supports modern society.

In many ways, a civil engineer career is about designing the environment in which people live. It is not just about structures—it is about life, movement, and connection.

The Reality of a Civil Engineer Career

However, the reality of a civil engineer career is quite different depending on where you are.

In many countries, civil engineers are respected as highly skilled professionals. When I worked abroad, people often viewed this career with pride and respect.

But in Korea, the perception has not always been the same.

When you say you work in civil engineering, some people still associate it with manual labor. While fieldwork is indeed an important part of the industry, the role of a design engineer—planning, analyzing, and creating—is very different.

Although the perception is gradually improving, there is still a noticeable gap.

Why Fewer Engineers Choose Design

Another thing I’ve noticed is that fewer young engineers are choosing a civil engineer career in design.

The reason is simple.

As a design engineer, you never stop learning. You must continuously study new codes, technologies, and methods throughout your career. There is no point where things become easy or routine.

Because of this, many younger engineers tend to move toward construction roles instead of staying in design.

How Civil Engineers Shape the World

Even so, I still strongly believe this:

Civil engineers are not just people who build structures.

They are people who design how others live.

Much of what we create goes unnoticed because it becomes a natural part of everyday life. Roads, bridges, and cities are things people use without thinking twice.

But behind all of it, there is a civil engineer.

And maybe that’s why this career is both invisible and incredibly important at the same time.
